I don't get any sound while running LenMus in Windows

For creating sounds LenMus uses the MIDI synthesizer of the computer sound card.

If you are running Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7, the MIDI synthesizer is running by default, and the problem with sound is probably due to having the MIDI output disabled or the MIDI volume setting too low.

But if you are running Windows 8 you should also check that a MIDI synthesizer is installed, as it seems to be (see this for instance) that a MIDI synthesizer is not longer included by default in Windows 8

Check that MIDI is enabled and MIDI volume settings

In Windows, open the master volume control. For instance, in Windows XP double click in the laudspeaker icon in taskbar. In other Windows versions (I don't use any of them) I don't know how to do for opening the master volume control, but I'm quite sure that it is not as you learnt for the previous Windows version. You will have to find it by yourself.

Once the master volume control is open, ensure that the mute checkbox in "SW synthesizer" is not checked. Also verify that volume for software synthesizer is not at minimum.

Check that a MIDI synthesizer is installed.

To check that you have a MIDI synthesizer installed and running, do the following:

  1. Run LenMus and open the MIDI Wizard (main menu > Sound > Run Midi wizard).
  2. In the wizard you can choose the MIDI synthesizer to use. If the selector is empty the problem is that there is no MIDI synthesizer installed or it is not running.

If no MIDI synthesizer is installed, you can install, for instance, this one: http://coolsoft.altervista.org/en/virtualmidisynth
